Science Studies Survival Guide

Science courses
- Lab coat’s are cool. The sooner you realise this, the better off you’ll be. Everyone has to wear one and “forgetting” yours is just poor form.
- Read the prac manual before the prac class.
- Science does not just mean writing up experiments. If you hate essays,
learn to love them, or at least learn how to live with having to write them. - Get into a goooood relationship with tutors, as they are usually able to explain something better than a lecturer who’ll just explain it the same way over and over again, until you end up even more confused.
- Spell check is your friend! Yet, it doesn’t know any of your science words. Be sure to tell your computer to remember them.
- If you have a question ask it. Many other people in the lecture/tutorial probably have the same question.
Resources
- Get your textbooks before O-week if possible — avoid the massive queues.
- Find out what your textbooks are at the bookshop website.
- Cheaper books at UNSW secondhand bookstore and Textbook Exchange.
- Use the discussion board on WebCT to ask questions and look at other peoples
questions.
Getting into uni life
- Don’t be afraid to sit next to someone in a lecture and introduce yourself. Everyone is looking for someone to become friends with.
- Meet people by joining a society and be involved in activities.
- Look at the Arc website for ways to become involved in the UNSW community.
Studying
- Study lectures from day one.
- The train’s a good place to listen to iLectures, especially if you’re
travelling for around 50min. However, recorded lecturers sound really slow (what are they doing in those enormous pauses?!), you might like to speed up the mp3.
Assignments
- Some tutors will give feedback on lab reports before the due-date,
if that’s any impetus to get them done early! - Know when all your assessments are due and exams are on.
Exams
- Look up the library website (MyCourse Reserve) for past papers.
- Don’t plan holidays during exam week or before the final timetable is released.
